Bloons

Our Bloons Games collection includes the entire main Bloons Tower Defense (Bloons TD) series!

What makes a game a Bloons game?

Tower Defense games exist as a subcategory of Strategy games. Players use various strategic plans to defend a territory from enemy attacks that occur in waves. Bloons Tower Defense games, first created by New Zealand developer Ninja Kiwi in 2007, feature a monkey society fighting enemies that use different colored balloons, or bloons, as their waves to take over a territory.

The bloons don't attack. They float down a maze, path or track. The player attempts to stop their movement and prevent the enemy from reaching the end of a territory by strategically placing towers and other defenses along the way. Bloons games differ from many traditional tower defense games because a player can use other forms of defense, such as monkey fighters that throw projectiles, cannons unattached to towers, and non-portable weaponry that packs a punch.

How do Bloons games provide players with a challenge?

Early installments of the series forced players to use turn-based mechanics. The player plans and implements a defense and then waits to see if it works without any options to adjust the strategy. After an attack, they use money made from defending the territory to improve the defense. Later games allow real-time adjustments, but then the player must deal with portable weapon losses, such as bombs and road spikes, that they must repurchase between rounds.

The unseen enemy changes their strategies as well. From round to round and game to game, the bloons increase in number and float at faster rates to overwhelm defenses. Some balloons contain one or more extra bloons (i.e., red ones hidden inside of blue ones), which means the player's defense must hit these objects more than once. Additionally, some balloons have special defenses, such as camouflage that makes the bloons undetectable and surfaces resistant to certain types of attacks.

Over time, the tracks become increasingly complex. As rounds increase in difficulty and installments change, the player must attempt to guess where the bloons might float because several paths lead to the end of a territory. They must also discover all the upgrade options for their fighters and weapons to plan ahead and guarantee that they have enough coins to perform upgrades at the right moments.

Why do players enjoy Bloons games?

Bloons games combine the fun and wacky idea of monkeys destroying lighthearted floating balloons with serious, powerful tower-defense warfare strategies and weapons. The games feature mysteries as well. Players excitedly learn through trial and error about the special capabilities of their defenses and the enemy bloons. Lastly, winning rounds by popping balloons gives players an intense feeling of satisfaction similar to the feeling they might experience by popping bubble wrap or playing pop-it games.
