Beyond the story in the opening credits, some details customized to the story, types of available foods and updated options in newer games, all Papa's Games have a similar structure:

They take place in an alternate reality known as The Flipverse that features three distinct dimensions. The Papa Louie Universe features a land mass with three time zones and various towns and cities. Papa Louie is a famous Italian chef and restaurant owner with a food-services empire that spans across the continent.

A player's avatar becomes a worker at a Papa's restaurant through a series of events outlined at the start of a game. Papa Louie hires them for the job or tricks them into taking it, asks them to manage a restaurant or gives them keys to a restaurant as a contest prize. Although Papa Louie is commonly considered a positive protagonist who merely wants to improve people's lives and his restaurants, he often performs underhanded actions to achieve his goals. The player must typically perform all duties in a restaurant on their own.

A Bit of History

The Papa's Games actually didn't start out as restaurant- or food-service simulation games. They began in 2006 with a traditional dungeon-style platformer called Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack! by Flipline Studios. In this game, Papa Louie and his nephew, Roy, were pulled into an alternate reality where they had to fight monsters who took over Papa's pizzas in the Papa Louie Universe. The game's action sequences and controls were very similar to standard platformers. Since then, Flipline Studios has produced two more similar games called Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack! and Papa Louie 3: When Sundaes Attack!.

Papa's Pizzeria is the first game in which the designers, Tony Solary and Matt Neff, focused on simulating the pros and cons of running a restaurant and honing multitasking and time-management skills. In Papa Louie's hometown of Tastyville, Roy must run Papa's Pizzeria out of the base of an apartment building while Papa Louie leaves town to have adventures elsewhere. Papa Louie disappearing without notice beyond a short note and abandoning his responsibilities are common themes along with the main character often expressing some form of concern about their circumstances.

As the Papa's Games became increasingly popular over the years with people from all walks of life, Flipline Studios expanded the franchise to perform world building and offer a more diverse variety of restaurants. They've also added HD and To Go! options for better gameplay.

All Papa's restaurants, even the food stands and shops, feature similar work zones, including an order area at the cash wrap counter, one or more cooking areas commonly referred to as cooking or grilling stations, and areas for adding toppings to plated foods or extra items like dips, side-order snacks or beverages. Some restaurants also feature a dining area where the main character serves customers.

Every game provides a clear tutorial that makes understanding gameplay incredibly easy. It walks the player step-by-step through their duties with their first order and even shows the mouse controls to use to complete tasks. That said, the games also accept inputs from trackpads and touchscreens for mobile users.

The player must complete ever order to a customer's satisfaction. They receive tips and positive reviews for payment. When a customer loves the meal, they leave high scores for certain service areas and a higher-than-average tip. Every day, the player receives an evaluation of their performance. Afterward, they might receive a new ingredient to add to the restaurant's menu, a new customer to add to a customer file or a promotion with a new title.

In most Papa's Games, the player must use their tips to upgrade the restaurant with new furniture, walls, flooring and posters. They can also upgrade their character's clothes. Some games also offer side games and tasks. Since Papa's Pancakeria, most of the games feature mini games with prizes and a promotional parade.
