What are Merge games?
Merge games are sorted into the Logic and Puzzle categories. Each game features merging of one or more items, typically idential pieces, to create a new or more evolved one. This category includes 2048 and Suika (i.e., Watermelon) as sub-categories.
Although debate exists about the origins of Merge games, the concept evolved from alchemy, cooking and scientific ideas about combining ingredients to create something different or new. Real-world construction with raw materials and side quests in fantasy and role-playing books and tabletop games added to the development of the idea that players could merge items to create new natural elements, materials, useful items and weapons.
The concept developed further in console and online fantasy, role-playing and crafting games and then with 2048 sliding block or tile and Suika evolution and claw machine or container gameplay. Merge has become so popular that many Battle, Match-3, Renovation, Simulation and other games now have some form of merge play (i.e., minigame, quest or task).
How are players challenged by Merge games?
Outside of the 2048, Suika and similar games, most Merge games offer multiple forms of play that aren't restricted to only merging objects. In standard 2048, the player merges identically numbered pieces to create higher-numbered ones until they reach 2048 and beyond. In standard Suika, they merge anthropomorphized fruit until they evolve the small fruits into larger ones and eventually create a watermelon. Of course, other versions of these games offer different merge shapes and types of objects.
Outside of those games, players often perform merges to achieve broader goals. They might merge two armored soldiers, dinosaurs or stickmen to create bigger and stronger ones for fighting in battle arenas or in defense of a tower or other position. Their merges might create goods and materials that help them build structures in an ever-expanding community, kingdom or territory. With design and decor games that involve business deliveries, they might merge common items like cleaning supplies or snacks and sweet treats to create new ones to sell and then use the money or other form of currency to pay for renovations of a room, house, business or entire property.
Lastly, these games often include additional challenges in various modes of play (i.e., competitive, levels and open world). For example, players might solve minigame puzzles, create and use boosters or special items, or participate in side quests.
Why do gamers love Merge play?
Although reasons vary based on the player and game, some players love to feel like they're creating or discovering something that's entirely new to them. In fighting games, merges can make players feel stronger and more powerful, like their avatars or armies. Many players just love the relaxing feeling that comes from repetitive actions, creating order from chaos, developing more or nicer things, setting their own pace, and solving puzzles.
