What are Plants vs. Zombies games?

Plants vs. Zombies (PvZ or PVZ) games are a subcategory of Action, Battle, Fighting and Tower Defense games. Typically, PVZ games require the player to defend a location against a zombie horde with a wide variety of ferocious anthropomorphic plants placed in various defense positions.

The game developer PopCap Games released the first Plants vs. Zombies game in 2009. The player defends a house in the suburbs by creating a garden between the house and zombies with plants grown from seed in the lawn. Later official and unofficial games introduced other locations, including historic sites in different time periods (i.e., Ancient Egypt, the Wild West, the Dark Ages, a Jurassic Marsh and the Far Future).

No matter the location, the plants fight the zombies using a variety of weapons from their bodies at a distance or with melee attacks. For example, mutated cherries explode as cherry bombs, potatoes act like landmines, and pea plants shoot peas.

How do Plants vs. Zombies games challenge players?

As with all TD games, the player must think strategically in PVZ games about where they should place their plant fighters in relation to zombie attackers and any plants that serve non-fighting purposes. The zombie horde often attacks by piling up in one area in waves or with a mix of attackers that have different skills.

Although all plant fighters can cause damage, some cause more damage than others, attack only a single zombie or a group, or have powers that only affect one zombie based on type. Additionally, some plants cause immediate destruction, while others take time.

Non-fighting plants perform tasks that make them useful overall, but only when they're closer to the house, away from the fighting. For example, sunflowers produce points to help the player purchase more plants and act as healers in later games. That said, in some games, sunflowers are also fighters.

Why do gamers love Plants vs. Zombies?

Plants vs. Zombies offers players a near-perfect expression of TD games with ever-more-interesting plant fighters and enemy zombies appearing through stages of attack set up along rows in the garden rather than traditional roads on a map. Most importantly, these games offer unique twists on the traditional zombie versus human stories with fantastic artwork that combines adorable-yet-powerful plants fighting gruesome-looking zombies.
