What are Drive-Mad games?
Drive Mad is a single-player series of Driving, Obstacle Course and Racing games. From level to level, a player directs different vehicles across, through or over obstacles in urban, suburban and rural block-world environments in an attempt to reach finish areas. All objects look like plastic and wooden building blocks and include various types of pegs and wheels.
The games in the Drive Mad series were originally designed by Martin Magni through a platform called Fancade. The website and app offer players the ability to both play and create vibrant full-color games designed with classic pixelated graphics that look like children's building blocks. Other Fancade favorites include Blocksworld, Kill Germs, Jump Swing, Odd Bot Out and Rescue Dinos.
How do Drive Mad games challenge players?
Drive Mad gameplay mechanics and in-world obstacles often make a player frustrated and "drive mad." For example, the player isn't allowed to steer a vehicle left or right. They can only move it forward or backward. They must also attempt to navigate real-world gravity, momentum and physics. The blocks are so realistically lightweight that the player can flip a vehicle when driving too fast forward or backward. During a crash or flip, the vehicle then breaks apart into each unique block part.
The player must also typically manage obstacles that require steering, such as driving across a rope bridge or slippery ice. They might need to crush another vehicle, make a near-vertical wall climb or drive with hard-edged or pointy tires. They also receive unique challenges, such as using their vehicle to push buttons and levers or jump over herds of animals. In most games, the player must master computer keys or onscreen gas (acceleration) and brake (deceleration) pedals to handle these challenges effectively.
Why do people adore Drive Mad games?
The Fancade roots of the Drive Mad series make it a part of a wide selection of similar-looking arcade games that help players feel a bit of nostalgia for older computer and console games. The player isn't stuck driving one type of standard vehicle either. Although they can drive regular cars and trucks, they also receive opportunities to drive block-designed mini cars, a wheeled house, a limousine, a moon buggy and even a tank. At the end of a level, the game also provides a fantastic photo-finish snapshot of the last scene. The photograph is a classic Polaroid snap with the photograph inside of a white frame that has narrow sides and a large bottom edge.
